Cambelts

The cambelt or timing belt as it is known is made from a rubber based composite to aid flexibility and is very much a fundamental part of the engine, providing synchronisation of several engine components which enable the engine to work.

Although the belt is generally protected or encased within the engine compartment to eliminate the entry of foreign objects, the belt is still susceptible to wear and tear and ageing. As a consequence it does require replacement in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines. Neglecting these guidelines could result in the belt coming loose over time or snapping completely. This failure could occur anytime, anywhere and at any speed often causing misalignment and in turn loss of synchronisation which could result in major engine damage like bent or broken valves, piston and cylinder head damage, which will require an expensive engine strip down.
